What is a Shortcode?

A shortcode is a 5 to 6 digit number that is issued by a CSCA (central registry), who collects a monthly fee for leasing you a shortcode. It is provisioned by wireless carriers to send and receive bulk SMS messages.  

Types of shortcodes are:  Vanity (you choose the number) and Generic (randomly selected by the issuer).
